The men of the Kwara State Police Command have paraded a 36-year-old medical doctor, Abass Adeyemi, over an alleged killing of four persons in the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Paul Odama, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on Monday at the headquarters of the command in Ilorin.

He said one of the victims, Olanipekun Ifeoluwa, who was reported missing at F Division was the same young lady who was allegedly killed and thrown into the bush at Alapa in Asa local government area of the state by the suspect.

The CP said investigation into the case revealed that the suspect was last seen with the deceased Ifeoluwa.

According to him, the circumstances surrounding the missing Ifeoluwa at Tanke and her being found dead at Alapa necessitated heightened suspicion that the suspect knew something about the missing lady.

“While the command was searching for the doctor, news filtered in that the Police Command in Edo had arrested Dr Abbas Adeyemi in connection with another case of killing.

“The command in an effort to get to the root of the serial murder case in Kwara state succeeded in getting him released from Edo to the kwara state command to help in the investigation

The men of the Kwara State Police Command have paraded a 36-year-old medical doctor, Abass Adeyemi, over an alleged killing of four persons in the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Paul Odama, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on Monday at the headquarters of the command in Ilorin.

He said one of the victims, Olanipekun Ifeoluwa, who was reported missing at F Division was the same young lady who was allegedly killed and thrown into the bush at Alapa in Asa local government area of the state by the suspect.

“Adeyemi confessed to have killed Ifeoluwa on June 24, 2022 by hitting her with an object on the head and dumped the body at a bush in Alapa.

“He also confessed to have earlier sedated and causing the kidnap and killing of one Abubakar Malam Abubakar and killing of one Nafisat Halidu, a casual worker at General Hospital both in Kaiama.

The suspect, according to the Commissioner, said that he concealed her body in a trash, filled the trash-can with cement and kept inside a locked store in the General Hospital Kaiama with the key in his procession.

“He also confessed to the killing of one unknown lady buried inside the same general hospital store.

“Both bodies were exhumed, recovered and deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital,” the CP said.

The police boss said the suspect (Adeyemi) confessed further to having been lured into organ harvesting by a yet-to-be-identified syndicate.

He added that a discreet investigation was still in progress to unravel other killings perpetrated by the suspect and his syndicate.

The National Operations Controller at the Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Mike Osatuyi, has assured that Nigerians will likely see more fuel availability in the next two weeks.

Mr Osatuyi stated this during an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Wednesday, February 1, as monitored by Nairametrics.

IPMAN’s assurance followed the crucial meeting held on January 31 with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited and all other stakeholders across the downstream petroleum value chain. As Osatuyi pointed out, the meeting was successful and all stakeholders will work together to ensure the crisis comes to an end.

Nobody is perfect: During the interview, Mr Osatuyi said that all stakeholders have agreed to sell fuel at affordable prices to reduce the burden on Nigerians. According to him, no one in the value chain is clean when it comes to all the challenges causing the fuel crisis, as there are bad eggs across all strata of the system. However, they are willing to tackle the issues and make fuel available at reasonable prices.

Supply and smuggling challenges: Mr Osatuyi went further to state that more depots will be made available so more products can come into the country, he also addressed the issue of cross-border smuggling which the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) had earlier said was a major cause of the lingering fuel crisis.

He highlighted the fact that the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) needs to caution their members not to drive their fuel trucks across the borders into neighbouring countries.

Fuel costs across the country: Mr Osatuyi said that if fuel is sold to marketers at N180 per litre, and other costs are added, Nigerians could end up buying fuel at N210 to N220 per litre, which is better than N500 per litre, which some people are already buying the commodity in the country.

According to him, NUPENG has to agree on how much marketers will pay for transportation costs as this will also determine how much will be added to the depot pricing.

Issue of fuel subsidy/deregulation: While speaking on fuel subsidy, Mr Osatuyi said the government should encourage a massive importation of fuel, so the prices can reduce. He said IPMAN supports fuel subsidy removal, and he advised that whatever income is generated after subsidies are removed (about N7 trillion per year) from fuel, should be used to develop critical infrastructure and welfare of the citizens to eliminate suffering.

He also said when subsidies are removed, and refineries are working at full capacity, there will be no importation cost and Nigerians will buy fuel at better prices. He said:

“We are ready to work with all stakeholders so that Nigerians can benefit. When the fuel subsidy is removed, the fuel cost will increase, but the money saved will be used for the benefit of Nigerians.”
For the record: Nigeria has one of the lowest fuel prices on the continent and this has led to unprecedented cross-border smuggling of fuel to other countries where fuel prices are higher. For instance, in Ghana, fuel is sold for 13.23 Cedis, which is about N487 per litre and in the Niger Republic, fuel is sold for 540 West African CFA Franc, which converts to N413.10 per litre.

Nigerians Hail Supreme Court For Suspending Friday’s Deadline of Using Old Banknotes

Nigerians have hailed the verdict of Supreme Court for temporarily suspending Friday’s deadline to stop using old banknotes, which had led to a cash crisis across the length and breadth of the country.

Majority of Nigerians interviewed by thegazellenews.com said the verdict has showed that the CBN stand before the latest development is anti-people.


A POS operator in based in Alimosho Local Government in Lagos State, Kehinde Popoola, said in an interview, “I praised the verdict of the Apex court for be on the side of Nigerians. The agonies Nigerians had gone through in the last couple of days were unprecedented. You have your money in bank and you cannot collect it, either the old notes or the new one. Tell me where it has happened in other countries of the world. The verdict is big relief to us”.


A Chieftain of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Alimosho Local Government in Lagos State, Dele Ogundimu, also showered praises on Supreme Court.

“I am very happy over the verdict of the court. It’s the best move. It’ll make things easier for us. They need to release all the old and new naira notes, because the pressure is too much. CBN should have extended the deadline for at least six months and that could have make easy for the new naira notes to circulate well,” Ogundimu said.

A pepper seller, Nimota Salami said, “I hail the verdict of the court. The court has seen what average Nigerians are facing as a result of the deadline by the CBN We have all seen what the CBN deadline had caused to us, the poor masses. We have money in banks, we cannot lay our hands on it. But with the verdict of the court, we can now do our normal transactions. Things will be normal again”.

A university student, Mutiu Ajadi, on his part, said the verdict is a welcome development and a big relief to many Nigerians who are going through hard time as a result of the CBN deadline.


“Our people have suffered greatly due to the incompetence of CBN .Supreme Court did the right thing. The suffering is unbearable. Shortage of new naira notes from banks has led to chaotic scenes as people tried to get their hands on them.

“There were fights at ATMs, protests and mob attacks on commercial banks. The chaos led to concern that it could affect this month’s elections,” Ajadi told thegazellenews.com.

Last week, APC Governors met President Buhari and urged him to rethink the policy. However, Buhari reiterated the deadline, vowing that the government would do “everything” to resolve the issues.

It is estimated that around 60 per cent of Nigeria’s adult population does not have a bank account – especially those living in rural areas.

The CBN said the currency redesign and replacement policy, which was announced in October, would help it tackle inflation, which is currently running at about 21 per cent, by reducing the amount of cash in circulation. It added that 80 per cent of the notes currently in circulation were being held outside financial institutions.

It said that the new notes would be harder to forge and also said it would limit the amount of withdrawals in order to promote a cashless society.

The deadline to stop using the old naira notes was initially 31 January but this was extended until 10 February to give the banks more time to roll out the new notes.

The Supreme Court decision comes after a legal challenge initiated by the APC-run northern states of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara earlier this month.

Their lawyers argued that the government’s policy had led to an “excruciating situation that is almost leading to anarchy in the land”.

The case has been adjourned to 15 February.

Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp has hailed the performance of Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford’s this season under Erik ten Hag.


The England international scored again on Saturday as Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 2-1 to keep their spot in the top four of the Premier League table.

The vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has declared that improving the welfare of Nigerian citizens by investing in the health and wellbeing of women and children in particular are paramount to the present administration.This informed why, according to him, the federal government was collaborating with states and development partners so that no young person would go through the needless frustration of joblessness.


The vice president, according to a statement yesterday, by his media aide, Laolu Akande, spoke weekend at Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area, Ogun State, where he inaugurated two human capital development projects of the federal government namely the 100-bed Mother and Child Hospital and the Skills Acquisition Centre.

Osinbajo said the federal government had ensured that, “we provide, in collaboration with state governments, places for the development of human capital. These include technology hubs and Skills Acquisition Centers.”


According to him, “in the last few years, our government has also taken several steps to improve the quality of life of our citizens. We have increased access to education, promoted sustainable agriculture, and improved infrastructure. Our objective is to provide opportunities for young people to have well-paying jobs.”He further stressed that the projects inaugurated showed the tremendous progress the federal government had made in achieving the SDGs and, in that process, promoting the health and welfare of the people.

“The hospital is a testament to our commitment to the healthcare of women and children, and to ensuring that we secure the future of Ogun State and Nigeria. The facility will not only provide primary healthcare to treat preventable diseases, but will also ensure that women have access to pre and postnatal care, which is absolutely vital to the wellbeing of our communities,” he added.

The vice president also emphasised that the project delivery underscored government’s recognition of the importance of healthcare facilities.He also expressed optimism that the hospital and Skills Acquisition Centre would serve as a model for other states to replicate, and that their establishment would contribute positively to the health, wellbeing and livelihood of all in Remo, Ogun State and Nigeria in general.

Osinbajo noted that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government continues to make efforts towards attaining the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, noting that the projects were implemented by the SDGs office in the Presidency.He then listed other ongoing projects under the SDGs in the Local Government Area to include “the construction of 250- bed Mother and Child Hospital, Ikenne (already 97% completed) and the Construction of a Mega School, Ikenne Community High School, as well as a Mini stadium at the Ikenne Community High School – nearing completion.”


“There is also the construction of 36 classrooms at the Mayflower School, Ikenne, and another Skill Acquisition Centre, at the Isanbi High School at Ilisan, which is also completed.”Other projects that have been mostly concluded in the Ikenne Local Government Area include constructions of Smart schools, and the construction of senior secondary and junior secondary classrooms in Mayflower.

“Equally, there had been the construction of a block of classrooms, administrative office, toilets and borehole in Ikenne Community High School.“Ongoing is a Tech hub, which will also have chalets for staff & visiting experts. There is also the 250-bed Hospital to be commissioned soon in Ikenne.“Other concluded projects are the modernization of the Ikenne Market and several installations of solar street lights in 10 different locations namely Ogunsanya Oduname Street, Ademolu Odeneye/ O&A road, Olaolu Ebun-Adubifa Avenue, Opanubi street, Ajina Street, Ayodele Soyode/ Bisi Onajole Street, Florence Oyetola Street / Idowu Salami street, IYC street,Alakenne and Aiyepe junction.


“There have also been completed Erosion control works and Water supply schemes in Ikenne and Ilisan.There is also the construction of a Smart Model school along old Sagamu road (for Early years, Primary & Secondary school students with facilities for special students. A 500 KVA transformer was also installed on Awolowo Avenue,” the statement added.Osinbajo then thanked Governor Dapo Abiodun for creating the enabling environment and working actively with the SDG Office to ensure the actualisation of the project.

Former Manchester City combative midfielder, Yaya Toure has named his favourite club to claim the Premier League title this season,

The former Ivory Coast international is hoping that his former club, Manchester City win the title but insisted that nothing can be taken away from Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side.

Arsenal and Manchester City are battling it out for this season’s title, with the Gunners currently atop while City are second in the league, just two points behind.


Manchester United on the other hand, are breathing down the neck of both teams with just 3 points adrift of the second place and 5 points behind the league leaders.

The Nigerian government is at war with itself, and that’s a statement that’s not exactly surprising to anyone.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria passed a judgement to temporarily halt the country’s pending ban on its old ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1,000 notes.

ICYMI: Last year, Nigeria’s apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria, announced redesigned currency notes for its old ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1,000 notes. Citizens originally had till January 31, 2023, to submit all old notes to commercial banks. After numerous requests, the deadline was extended to February 10 due to a scarcity of new and old notes.

And now…

The redesign programme has thrown the country in disarray.

Presently, Nigerians—many of whom are angry with the abrupt policy—are reporting scarcity of cash as most old notes have been deposited at banks while new notes are being rolled out at a slothful pace.

But it’s not only the Nigerian people who are against the policy’s short timeline. Earlier this week, three Nigerian state governments filed for a temporary injunction to block the deadline at the Supreme Court. A seven-man panel reviewed the injunction and granted it, pausing the February 10 extension.

There is, however, speculation on whether the CBN will adhere to the injunction as legal critics dispute the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction to decide on currency issues.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also urged the CBN to extend the cutoff date with rep Ari Aisen stating, “In light of hardships caused by disruptions to trade and payments due to the shortage of new banknotes available to the public, in spite of measures introduced by the CBN to mitigate the challenges in the banknote swap process, the IMF encourages the CBN to consider extending the deadline, should problems persist in the next few days leading up to the February 10, 2023 deadline.”

On February 15, the Supreme Court will hear the lawsuit brought forward by the Nigerian states who are against the deadline.

Zoom out: While the Supreme Court’s action may have extended the deadline, Nigerians are still likely to remain in the same predicament. Neither old nor new notes are plentiful in circulation and many have to choose between long ATM queues—where banks have placed limits on cash withdrawals—or buying new notes at exorbitant rates from POS operators

JP Morgan, a leading global bank, has opened a regional office in Kenya.

The bank will oversee its East African businesses and operations from its new Nairobi regional office. According to a 2018 interview of the bank’s CEO Jamie Dimon reposted on Kenyan Wall Streets, this move was a five-year process due to regulatory issues. In that interview, Dimon stated that the bank had hired a unique team of bankers to help coordinate and expand the bank’s relationships in Africa, especially in Kenya and Ghana.

William Ruto, Kenya’s President, was reported to have hailed the development as a “vote for Kenya’s emerging success in the global marketplace”. Ruto is also reported to have met with the bank’s vice-chairman and global head of public sector group, Daniel Zelikow, and they discussed the need for development financing to be responsive to climate change.

Dimon had expressed the bank’s interest in expanding its services and targeting large multinationals not well-served by local investment banking firms due to a lack of expertise in handling large transactions.

JP Morgan, present in 100 countries around the world and a London EMEA headquarter, has expressed its commitment to help drive sustainable economic growth in the region. Judging by the development work the bank has done on the continent, its entry into East Africa is expected to create job opportunities, help build sustainable local businesses, and attract more foreign investment to the country.

Several bank customers’ accounts frozen over alleged N2.9 billion fraud in Flutterwave

Despite Flutterwave’s insistence that its system was hacked, several bank customers have confirmed that their accounts have been frozen in connection with the alleged N2.9 billion fraud on the fintech’s system.

Nairametrics gathered that the alleged stolen funds transferred across banks is being traced up to the 5th recipient, most of whom received payment for rendering legitimate services and had no knowledge of the said fraud.

As of the time of filing this report, some customers of Access Bank, GTBank, FCMB, Stanbic IBTC, Providus Bank, Union Bank, Sterling Bank, and Fidelity Bank, among others, have confirmed that their accounts have been frozen in connection to the fraud.

Bank customers who have been reacting to Flutterwave’s denial of the fraud expressed shock that messages from their respective banks confirmed that their accounts were being frozen on the orders of Flutterwave.

Customers query denial: Reacting to Flutterwave’s insistence that its system was not hacked and that no customer lost money, a bank customer whose 3 bank accounts have been frozen, Gbadamosi Muyideen, said:

“3 of my bank accounts with Access, Providus, and FCMB have been frozen in connection with the Flutterwave hack. My account officers from the three banks told me that flutterwave requests my accounts be frozen and that I received fraudulent money from Flutterwave hack proceeds. They went as far as freezing accounts up to the 5th beneficiary.

“How come they are denying the hack? I provided the service for the fund I received from my customers through Flutterwave. And the worst part is that all the people I paid through the 3 accounts have been on my neck because they can’t go about their daily business due to this.
“Now I’m completely heartbroken, stranded, and feel like ending it once and for all because I can’t do business now and I can’t finance my daily needs.”

Also reacting to Flutterwave’s denial via a Twitter post, another bank customer, whose account has been frozen, Ufedo David, said his bank contacted him and that his account has been placed on hold, citing a petition from Fluttwerwave’s lawyer. A screenshot of an email from Stanbic IBTC to Ufedo, dated February 15, 2023, reads:

“Dear Mr Ufedo,
“Kindly note that we received a request from Flutterwave for an unauthorized debit to the tune of N7,098,468 on 6th February 2023. The Fraud Desk team placed a hold and sent a mail across to gain knowledge about the purpose of inflow. We have provided feedback received to Flutterwave and await a response.”

Directing his anger at his bank, an Access Bank customer, Adeyemi Adeniyi, whose account was also frozen in connection with the fraud, tweeted this:

“@accessbank_help, why have you refused to remove the lien on my bank account even after I have provided all the required documents you requested for? I have no business with @theflutterwave and their account being hacked. How does it affect me?”
What Flutterwave said: While the action on several accounts that had received money from Flutterwave in recent times suggested otherwise, the company had insisted that it was not hacked.

“During a routine check of our transaction monitoring system, we identified an unusual trend of transactions on some users’ profiles. Our team immediately launched a review (inline with our standard operating procedure), which revealed that some users who had not activated some of our recommended security settings might have been susceptible.
“We want to confirm that no user lost any funds, and we take pride in the fact that our security measures were able to address the issue before any harm could be done to our users.
“We want to reassure you that Flutterwave has not been hacked,” the company said in a statement it released on Sunday

Napoli and Super Eagles of Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen will earn an additional €260,000 (N120m) if he scores 30 goals for the Parthenopeans in the 2022/23 season.

According to Italian media La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 24-year-old activated his goals bonus in his contract after scoring his 20th goal of the season, which saw him earn €130,000 (N64m).

Osimhen scored in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League round of 16 to take his tally for the 2022/23 season to 20 and unlock the €130,000 bonus (N63.6m).

The Edo born striker has been instrumental in helping Napoli maintain their spot at the summit of Serie A and has scored 21 goals and four assists in 25 games for the Naples-based side this term.

The Napoli star has a clause in his contract that will see him receive an extra €130,000 if he scores 25 goals and an additional €130,000 if he scores 30 goals this season.


“He (Osimhen) has already hit his first contractual bonus, which included a €130,000 bonus upon reaching 20 goals. But at this rate, Victor risks making blows because the same figure starts at the 25th and also at the 30th goals,” La Gazzetta hello Sport stated in it's report.

“Objectives that become decidedly within the reach of a great striker who has achieved these 21 goals in just 25 games. There are at least 15 challenges ahead and probably they can become 17, dreaming of being able to reach 20, which would mean going to play the Champions League final in Istanbul.”

Osimhen has scored in each of his last eight Serie A appearances and has 19 goals in 20 league matches

He could help deliver the first Scudetto for the Partenopei in over three decades.

Neymar injured again

The feeling was tense after three defeats: to Marseille, Monaco and Bayern, and a fourth consecutive defeat looked on the way. That was until Mbappe and Messi showed up, and turned the game around at the death

Rapper Falz has taken to Twitter to tackle Babajide Sanwo-Olu who took to the platform to thank Lagosians for re-electing him as Governor of the state.

In his statement, Sanwo-Olu said that he is deeply humbled and grateful for the overwhelming support and trust of the good people of Lagos State.

He also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for leaving a legacy of fairness and electoral outcomes that reflect the will of the people.

The statement read;

"Thank you Lagosians! I am deeply humbled and grateful for the overwhelming support and trust of the good people of Lagos State. I am honored to be re-elected as your Governor and pledge to continue to work tirelessly to deliver a better Lagos for all. Thank you for believing in me. I have personally penned my thoughts in a letter to you. I hope you read it and truly feel my passion for Lagos and for you.

"These elections have deeply tested us as a people. This victory is not just mine, but it belongs to every Lagosian. I have worked hard to live up to this responsibility of governing the most important subnational economy in Africa. We certainly could not have done this by ourselves. Thank you to the Almighty God and all of Lagos. Immense gratitude goes to our great party, APC, and our President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Thank you to the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for your commitment to leaving a legacy of fairness and electoral outcomes that reflect the will of the people. Reacting to this, Falz claimed that Sanwo-Olu was not re-elected, but selected himself. He also claimed that everyone saw what played out.

He tweeted;

I was looking at this word excellence. How do you really attain excellence.
Let me define the word in my understanding, it means you excelling at what you do, successful, favored, stand out, being 100% in all that you do.
You as a human being can attain good success and excellence from the one that created you.
So i was looking at Ecclesiastes and the preacher said everything is vanity, your struggles and striving without God.
In my understanding these whole pursuits for wealth, fame, power without God ends in futility and leaves a soured taste in your mouth.

What you need to excel is in Isaiah 11v2., Proverbs 8. The Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Everything you seek you will still get in God, what you need is seeking him and finding him, doing all he instruct and then you will prosper and have good success. So you need patience, drop every form of pride, arrogance, fraudulent behavior, receive sound wisdom and understanding, etc. from your creator and live.
If you are thinking of time, it belongs to the one who created the earth and you. Stay the cause with God and record excellence in all that you do.

Amid the worsening naira crisis, the total amount of currency-in-circulation in the Nigerian economy has tumbled from N3.3tn to N1.54tn, a Central Bank of Nigeria document obtained by The PUNCH has revealed.

This came as a biting shortage of new naira notes amid an acute scarcity of old currency has inflicted untold hardship and pain on millions of Nigerians, leaving several people stranded.

The latest central bank document, obtained by one of our correspondents, showed that the total amount of currency-in-circulation fell by 53.33 per cent within three months.

Specifically, the currency-in-circulation fell from N3.3tn recorded on October 31, 2022 (a few weeks before the CBN began the implementation of the naira redesign policy) to N1.54tn on January 31, 2023.

The 53.33 decrease in C-in-C followed bank customers’ huge deposits of old N1000, N500 and N200 notes ahead of the CBN’s February 10, 2023 controversial deadline.

Among other things, the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, had said one of the objectives of the naira design policy was to mop up currency outside the bank vaults which he put at N2.7tn. He said with such a huge amount outside the banking system, it would be difficult for monetary policy initiatives to impact the economy.

The PUNCH obtained the latest data from a report presented by the CBN Deputy Governor, Folashodun Shonubi, at a forum in Abuja last week.
